Design, buy materials and then build your own powered relief vehicle and bridge. Deliver relief supplies. Winners conquer the most challenges-cost is the tie breaker.
Disaster Recovery River Crossing is ideal for year 6s. It lasts between 2 and 2 and a half hours and can be run with groups of up to 60 pupils. Pupils work in teams of 6. Adults from the school enjoy acting as judges.
This challenge develops team working and problem solving. Pupils develop iterative design, build, test and modify skills. We introduce them to the practical application of Science and Engineering concepts such as Beam, Column, Span and Load ratio. These are then used by students to try to design the winning structure and vehicle. We introduce Maths challenges through the design activities and also the need to purchase and use materials.
